You may have seen Smit Farms at various Farmers Markets throughout California. Smit Farms sells at markets ranging from Sacramento to Berkeley and several towns in between and all the way down to San Diego, CA.
This is the story of how and why Smit Farms is able to make ends meet
on opposite sides of the state. Smit's main goal is sell our one of
a kind apples to the good people throughout California.
Bay Area Farmers Markets
Smit Farms has been selling apples, blueberries, cherries, various stonefruit, and grapes in the Bay Area for the past 25 years. It all started when John Smit converted 40 acres of his dairy farm into our classic Fuji and Gala apple trees, which at the time were new to California. Then John discovered the farmers' markets in Northern California and increased direct sales slowly over the years, John started converting his farm from cows to apples, grapes and cherries with the help of his sons.
Southern California Farmers Markets
The difference between Northern California and Southern California Farmers Markets all comes down to the environment for growing. The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) know the difficulties at which growing in San Diego faces such as cost for land, water limitations and climate hinderance. These factors allow Southern California farmers market vendors the ability to partner with other farms depending on the Certified Producers Certificates.
The Smit brothers came to the southern California region to discover a vacuum of fresh fruit. Smit Farms has a hub now which allows fruit from the farm to be transported directly to So Cal and sold directly into farmers markets in the whole region.
Smit Farms is working hard to provide the highest quality fruit picked fresh from the tree just days before its sold to the people in the Bay Area and in So Cal regions.
